Obituary
Howard Whitfield Powlison was born on October 12, 1919, in Torracari, Charcas, Bolivia. His parents were missionaries and Howard was their first of six children. He was educated in Bolivia by a teacher who had been brought in to teach the missionary children. However, the program only went through the 8th grade, so in 1932 - when Howard was 13 years old - he was sent to the United States to attend high school at the Westervelt Missionary Home in South Carolina.

Three years after his arrival, he received word that his father in Bolivia had died. He didn't hear until two months after the fact because of slow mail in those days. His mother eventually came back to the United States with the children and the administrators of the Westervelt Home brought them to South Carolina, gave Howard's mother a job, and Howard was reunited with his family.

When Howard was 18, a new girl named Doris Ruth Waggoner arrived at the school. She was too young to date Howard but once she was old enough, they dated for a year and half and were married on September 5, 1942.

The young couple left the school to start their new life together and went to New York, where Howard trained to be a missionary. He received a BA from Columbia Bible College in 1942. During this time, he started preaching his first sermons as a fill-in pastor for a Baptist church that was in the process of looking for a permanent pastor. They finally decided to ask Howard to become their pastor and he became an ordained minister of their church in 1942, serving there until 1949. While at this first church, he also attended Buffalo Bible College, where he received medical training and a certificate in 1943. But the hand of Providence would not take Howard to the foreign mission field as he had previously thought. He would stay on American soil and went on to pastor several churches in the New York area before he and his growing family made their way out west to California where his mother lived. That was in 1962.

In 1964, Howard and Doris became parents to their 13th child and a few years later brought their large family up to Oregon. In addition to raising 13 children, they also became foster parents. As if that didn't keep them busy enough, Howard supported the family and lived out his faith through a variety of roles in his many years in Oregon: Director of Christian Teens Christian Research, Associate pastor and one of the founders of Country Church, elder and treasurer at Bethel Church, secretary and treasurer of Christian Research, Inc., chaplain of American Family Enterprises, assistant principal of Bethel Christian Academy, and founder and pastor of Canby Community Church, where he served for several years. He also served as the Board of Directors for Love in Action, was a member of Community Concerned Citizens, and taught the Bible to inmates at a prison up until his late 80s.

Howard, although serious in personality, had quite the sense of humor as well, giving him a reputation for being a master joke teller. But above all else, Howard loved to study and teach the Bible. He was not afraid to share the gospel with whoever would listen, and challenged others to be ready when God calls us home. Howard was ready when God called him home on Christmas Day morning, and received the best Christmas gift of his life. He died peacefully, with family by his side.

He and his wife, Doris Powlison, were married for 69 years when he departed this world at age 92. Surviving him are his beloved wife, three siblings, and over 100 descendants, including 12 children, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. One daughter, one granddaughter, and one great-grandson preceded him in death but the surviving family are excited that Howard is now with them once again and that someday, they too, will be reunited with "Grandpa".

Howard married Doris Ruth Waggoner on 5 Sep 1942. Doris was born in 1922. She died in 1989.

They had the following children.

+ 637 M i Kenneth Whitfield Powlison.
+ 638 M ii Gordon Howard Powlison.
+ 639 M iii Douglas Kenneth Powlison.
+ 640 M iv Robert Daniel Powlison.
+ 641 F v Cynthia Ruth Powlison.
