48. John Poole 1 (George Poole , George Poole , Anne Cathrin Buckinger , Mathew ) was born in c 1808 in Carnew, Wicklow, Ireland. He died on 6 Sep 1849 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

John married Susannah Richardson, daughter of William Richardson and Mary Emily Collings, on 14 Jun 1843 in All Saints, Parish Church of Great Oakley, Essex, England. Susannah was born in 1822 in Great Oakley, Essex, England. She died on 15 Jul 1898 in Waterloo, New South Wales, Australia. She was buried in St. John's Cemetery, Camden, New South Wales, Australia.

Susannah married John POOLE, an Irish born private in the British Army, when her brother William (3rd) was only 14 months old. She never knew her youngest brother, John, as he was born after she'd sailed on the "Maria Soames" a convict ship bound for Van Dieman's Land (later renamed Tasmania) in 1844. After discharging its load of convicts John POOLE and his detachment of The 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot, were transferred to New South Wales, but not for long!
In 1843 it was decided that the 58th regiment("The Black Cuffs) should take over garrison duties in New South Wales from the 80th which was going to Madras. The 58th provided the guards for 19 convict ships that left London and Ireland for Tasmania or Norfolk Island in 1842-45. In 1845 N.S.W. reluctantly agreed to send the 58th to N.Z. because of the unrest with the Maori in the Bay of Islands. The regiment stayed in N.Z. until November 1858 when they embarked for England, the regiment was only 16 officers and 194 men strong. Some detachments returned to Australia and some took their discharge before this.
In 1845, Susannah gave birth to her first son, George, in Auckland (possibly at the barracks situated in what is now Albert Park). By 1847 her second child, Susannah, was born in New South Wales. John took his discharge from the Army part way through 1848, but died the following year, while Susannah was expecting their third child, who she named John William. This extract from Susannah's letter to her brother-in-law explains the circumstances of her life.
~ My dear Husbands illness was short brought on him being to constant at the shoe making business which brought pulpitation of the heart. ~ In respect to Circumstances I was left badly of with my Young family and had to Contend with the World under very Great difficultys but I did by the Assistance of the Almighty God bear up against the troubles I was exposed to. ~ I was at the age of 27 when my poor Husband Died I found my Health fast Declining by the constant attention I had to pay to the Employment that I was following working at my needle. My family was Getting more Expensive and myself less able to strugle with Them and an offer of Marriage was made to me. I thought it best to Accept the offer ~
Susannah's second marriage was to the widowed James BUTLER, who was a former convict, transported in 1829. By 1851, when they married, he was working on the 15,000 acre Brownlow Hill Estate near Camden in New South Wales. He already had four children, so they started married life with seven children to raise, and nine months later the first of their six children were born. James subsequently secured property at Spotted Gum, Glenmore, where their descendants lived for many years. Susannah never returned to England. By the time of her death, at the age of 76, she had 44 surviving grandchildren, (and innumerable step-grandchildren) and had buried two daughters. Young Susannah lived for only seven years or so, and Sarah had died the year before Susannah's own death. Five other grandchildren had died as infants. Susannah was buried, along with James, (who died in 1888) in the churchyard of St John's in Camden, New South Wales, and many of her descendants live in the environs still.
