LETTER -
Mansfield, Ontario about 1955-57My Dear Ethel,
I received your letter and sent Don out to borrow a typewriter. Well he brought it home and it isn't working properly. The owners have three children who are allowed to make playthings of anything and I guess the typewriter was one.
So I'll just write you a few of the pertinent facts about the Lakings. Grandfather Laking came to Canada from Darlington in Yorkshire, England. Left there after he was fifty and came out alone leaving his wife, three sons and two daughters to follow a year later. When the year was up they started over and some sort of plague broke out on the ship. His wife died and his two daughters. He went to New York to meet them and that was the news that greeted him. But he couldn't find the boys. Searched all the hospitals until he was pretty sure he never would find them. One day he started going over the hospitals again and in passing through one of the wards a child cried out "there is Daddy" and that was Uncle Tom. He was just seven years old. William was Art's dad. Now Uncle Tom had a son Jimmie who was a harness maker and moved to Winipeg a long while ago and if Harold has met a friend in Winnipeg by the name of Laking as his father was James Laking living in Winnipeg, I would say he was Uncle Tom's grandson and a cousin of Harold. Grandfather Laking's sons were Thomas, William and John. And Will Laking in Wolsley is the only son of John. We never knew them very well not nearly so well as Uncle Tom's and Uncle Bill
Our Grandmother's maiden name was Mary BRETT and Grandpa Laking met her at Mono Mills Centre after he returned from New York. She was a direct descendant of two brothers by the name of BRETT who came to Ireland from Holland with William of Orange. A Brett girl from Alliston went to Ireland on her honeymoon and visited the homestead land that had been given the boys by William. There was a bachelor brother and spinster sister living on the farm, the last of the Bretts. The girl took a picture of the home and it was very nice. large stone house and the old couple were standing out in front. Now you know by his second marraige, Grandfather Laking had three daughters and one son - Aunt Mary Jane, Millie's mother, Mother Tamer, Aunt Ella (tr. Elean), Willie Davidson's Mother and Uncle George, Inez's father. Come down some day next summer and we'll talk Laking all day. I am sorry Wilbert's wife is sick. It does worry you when folks are not well.
I tried to type Gramp's obituary but I made an awful job of it. I'll send it along and maybe Wilbert could have a decent one typed. An old neighbour of Mothers from Whitfiled had it in a scrap book and gave it to Molly. She has been in New Brunswick all winter with Lois. Is coming home next week. Now I hope to see you next summer Ethel and I hope you can make something out of this scrawl.
Love Ella (Mrs. Thomas Gallaugher) Mansfield, Ont.

Oliver Douglas Wood 1890-1966
Notes:
The second Son of George Alec and Rachel Kidd Wood....lived most of hislife farming the land in the Municipality of Cameron, Township 5, Range23, some 5 miles South of Hartney, on the West Half of 15-5-23, whichhe purchased from George Sutherland, and resided there until he and hisFamily retired to Hartney in 1957.Ollie received his education at the Chain Lakes School, and upongraduation took up farming. He was a hard working Farmer, as were all ofhis neighbors, and he took great pride in his farm and his livestock. He operated a mixed farm consisting of cattle, horses, pigs and poultry, had a real love for his horses and kept them will fed and groomed.
His crops consisted of wheat, barley and oats, some of these crops beingused as feed for livestock and some sold to the grain elevator.Although he only had a half section of land, he made a good living offthe land. Now many farmers in Manitoba have at least four sections ormore of land. Ollie's Brother Percy Wood farmed the old homestead onthe adjacent half section and as was the custom of the times, they andother neighboring farmers collectively worked together at harvest timetaking off the crops.
Ollie was very outgoing and loved to visit; he was never too busy for afriendly chat with one of his neighbors across the fence; was a verycaring and thoughtful individual , going to the aid of anyone who neededhelp and always assisting a friend in need. This was a trait that wasalways mentioned by anyone who knew Ollie!
Ollie was united in marriage to Edythe Caroline Dunning, the Daughter ofJames and Marguerite Morrison Dunning of Dand, Manitoba on December 16,1936. Ollie and Edythe had two children, Daughter Marion Margrite and aSon who died at birth.
He was a loyal Member of the United Church of Hartney, and afterretirement enjoyed living in this quaint little town of Hartney,Manitoba, however he and his Wife Edythe moved to Winnipeg in 1964,where he lived out his life and passed away on February 2, 1966. He isburied in the Wood Family Plot in Harney.

Edythe Dunning 1902-
Notes:
Edythe Daughter of James and Marguerite Morrison Dunning was raised on afarmstead on the banks of the Chain Lakes near Hartney, Manitoba, Canada.
She received her education at the Chain Lake School, the Dand School andher Grade XI in Hartney. She was a very capable musician having taken both voice and piano lessonsfrom the age of 7 years until she graduated from high school. TheDunning Family lived ten miles from Hartney, but once a week winter andsummer Edythe and her Family made the trip to town so she could havepiano lessons. Imagine what it was like making a trip to town in ahorse drawn buggy in the summer and by horse and sleigh in the winter. No modern cars with heaters for warmth or air conditioning during the hotsummer season. The dedication and sacrifice of Parents in those days topursue the education of their children can be greatly admired!
Edythe and her Parents were very active in the Hartney United Church, where she sang in the choir, at weddings funerals and many social eventsin the community. She also taught Sunday School for many many years, andwas a Member of the Women's Missionary Society. Church was and hasremained a very important part of Edythe's life.
A very quiet person by nature, and never complaining her motto is "Thereis always something good if a person only stops long enough to look atit", and that is the way Edythe has lived her life....."A Real Lady!"
On July 23, 1994 Edythe was 92 years old and continues to enjoy life tothe fullest. She loves music and does a lot of reading and puzzles, watches most sports on T.V. as well as game shows. She does most of herown house work, all of her own cooking and baking and enjoys a remarkablystrong memory.
Edythe returned to Hartney in 1987 to be near her Daughter andSon-In-Law, Marion and Tom Aitken and lives in a Seniors Residence inHartney, Manitoba, Canada. Quote her Daughter Marion......"Mother ismost certainly a great Role Model and is going to be a very hard Act ToFollow"!
