CURTIS ROCHELLE HONORED FOR PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS
For his philanthropic efforts on behalf of the University of Wyoming and the College of Agriculture, Curtis Rochelle, a former Rawlins area rancher who now lives in Cheyenne, has been named a 2004 Outstanding Alumnus for the college.
Rochelle and the college’s other outstanding alumnus for 2004, Robert Sackett, now of Tucson, Ariz., will be honored Oct. 1 and 2 as part of Ag Appreciation Weekend on the UW campus.
Rochelle and his family have donated a record $5.5 million to UW. Their contributions funded the Curtis and Marian Rochelle Athletic Center and established the Curtis and Marian Rochelle Professorship in the College of Agriculture. The professorship is in memory of John Hill, dean of the college from 1923 to 1950.
Rochelle earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science from UW in 1941, served as the UW Alumni Association president in 1946, and was a member of the university’s board of trustees from 1983 to 1989, earning a trustee award of merit.
“Curt stands as a symbol of what a devoted, gracious graduate of UW best exemplifies, and he has been most generous in his support of his alma mater,” says retired U.S. Senator Clifford Hansen of Jackson. “He makes friends easily and listens to other people, which are real attributes in my opinion.”
Rochelle was born in Lusk and graduated from Natrona County High School in Casper in 1933. He founded Rochelle Livestock Company, a sheep ranch located near Rawlins, in 1942 and is a former president of the Carbon County Wool Growers Association.
Rochelle backed research in the agricultural industry including the development of the Warhill breed of sheep by the Warren Livestock Company and John Hill. The white-faced composite breed was founded in the 1950s for its outstanding wool and ability to “take advantage” of Wyoming’s harsh range conditions, says Hansen, and “that’s a pretty big order. Curt was keenly aware of what the producers were shooting for, particularly with wool, and he closely followed the success of Warren Livestock and Dean Hill,” Hansen says.
“His inquiring mind and his ability to listen resulted in the development of programs and policies that led to sustained progress in agriculture, managing land, and grazing as well as the development of the Warhill,” he adds.
Such attributes spilled over to other ventures for Rochelle.
He is a director and principal of United International Holding, Inc., a cable television firm which serves 33 companies around the world, and he is a director of the Rawlins National Bank.
Previously, Rochelle was a director and principal of United Artists Entertainment and a former director of United Cable Television.
“He is a very, very good inquirer, and he knows what questions to ask,” Hansen says. “He is certainly a born leader.”
Rochelle’s contributions to UW started when he was a student. He served as president of his senior class and was an active member of the College of Agriculture’s honor society.
The Rochelle family contributed to the college’s “Excellence in Agriculture” fund in 1980, and he has been an annual supporter of the Cowboy Joe Club since 1981.
The college named Rochelle and his wife Marian as “outstanding donors” in 1990, and he was honored with the 20th UW Medallion Service Award four years later. The award recognizes outstanding service and dedication to the university.
Rochelle was also presented with the UW Cornerstone Award.
“The award is to recognize individuals who have strengthened the very foundation of this institution,” says UW President Philip Dubois.

Rancher, philanthropist Curtis Rochelle dies at 89
Associated Press
CHEYENNE -- Curtis Rochelle, a rancher, businessman and philanthropist who, with his wife Marian, was perhaps the biggest individual donor to the University of Wyoming died Saturday in Phoenix. He was 89.
Funeral arrangements were pending.
"Curt was a proud alumnus of UW and served as a member of the UW Board of Trustees between 1983 and 1989. He was also someone to whom I could always turn for sage advice," University of Wyoming president Philip L. Dubois said Sunday. "I am glad to have known him, and wish that every president of the University of Wyoming who comes after me could have as well."
Rochelle was born in Lusk, and grew up on a ranch in central Wyoming. He herded sheep to earn money for college, graduating from the University of Wyoming with a degree in agriculture in 1941.
In 1968, Rochelle was easily elected to a term in the state House of Representatives, but he did not run for re-election.
"He liked thinks that moved faster," said Clarence Brimmer, a longtime friend and business associate of Rochelle, now serving as a U.S. District Judge in Cheyenne.
Dubois called Rochelle and his wife "the most generous donors to the university in its 119 year history," citing more than $6.6 million in gifts, including an endowed chair in animal science and a landscape endowment. The Rochelle Athletics Center bears their name.
Rochelle also was a university trustee from 1983-89.
The family's philanthropy extended beyond the university. The Rochelles and Marian's daughter, April Brimmer Kunz, gave $300,000 to the city of Cheyenne to build an amphitheater and skate park at Lions Gate Park and helped pay for the construction of the new Cheyenne Animal Shelter. The family also donated money for the construction of the Rochelle Ranch Golf Course in Rawlins.
"They are generous people," Sue Castaneda, executive director of the Cheyenne Animal Shelter said Sunday. "When they see a need, they step up and help."
Rochelle is survived by his wife Marian; a daughter, Kathleen Jaure, of Rawlins; a son, Jim Rochelle, of Gillette; a stepdaughter, April Brimmer Kunz, of Cheyenne; and six grandchildren.

William Rochelle - Wyoming Tribune-Eagle - (Apr/18/2005)
Curtis W. Rochelle
1915-2005
Curtis William Rochelle, who worked his way from a hard-scrabble ranch north of Douglas to a prominent place in Wyoming's heart, died at his winter home in Phoenix, Ariz., on April 9, He was 89. Born to Albert and Kathleen (Ogden) Rochelle on June 12, 1915, he rose from humble beginnings to become a rancher, livestock broker, businessman, member of the board of directors of a global communications company, Wyoming legislator, University of Wyoming trustee and philanthropist.
In addition to business and civic achievements, most remember Curt for a quick, wry wit. He loved a story and always wanted to tell a good joke rather than deliver a pompous speech. That quality hints at a core humility strikingly at odds with the commanding presence of his six-foot, five-inch frame and indomitable spirit. His lust for life was made manifest in a peripatetic nature; he traveled around the world at least twice, learning and teaching. He enjoyed reminiscing about his travels and displayed a remarkable memory for the places he had visited and events he had witnessed.
A lasting commitment to the University of Wyoming was Curt's legacy. It was cemented early. He graduated in 1941 with a degree in agriculture. He was the senior class president and a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. A nascent business acumen blossomed in those college years. While pursuing undergraduate studies he had a successful flower business, furnishing corsages for campus social events. He sold the business upon graduation. Curtis served on the Board of Trustees and later in life broke through the ceiling for charitable contributions to the university with a generosity as unpretentious as it was unprecedented. His example inspired others. A lifetime of dedication was recognized with the University's Medallion Award, The President's Cornerstone Award, and introduction into the UW Athletic Hall of Fame.
When asked about his service in the Wyoming legislature, Curtis would inevitably divert attention to his mother, who was one of our first women legislators. She was elected to the House of Representatives from Natrona County.
The Rochelles winter in Arizona, but Curt's heart was always in Wyoming, and in particular his beloved Carbon County. That source of affection was recently another object of his largess. A substantial donation enabled Rawlins to build a municipal golf course.
Curt always looked forward to the annual spring trip north to his lifelong Wyoming friends and a summer home in Saratoga. He insisted on going home by the first of May and refused to return to Arizona until the Wyoming Cowboys had played their final home football game.
He was a member of the Cowboy Joe club, a Mason of the Blue Lodge, pa resident of Wyoming Woolgrowers, Rotarian, and president of the Rawlins Elks Club.
Curtis is survived by his wife, Marian; his children, Kathleen Jaure of Rawlins, Jim Rochelle of Gillette and April Brimmer Kunz of Cheyenne; his sister, Margaret; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Ogden, Marion and Rodney; and a sister, Jean.
Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m.May 15 at St. Matthews Episcopal Cathedral in Laramie, followed by a reception at the Rochelle Athletic Center on the University of Wyoming Campus. Everyone is invited to come, remember and celebrate the life and times of Curtis William Rochelle. The price of admission is one good joke.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to a favorite charity.
