He died of causes related to age Monday in a Portland care center. Mr. LaVelle was 88.
Born Dec. 24, 1904, in Los Angeles, he moved to the Portland area from San Francisco in 1945.
Mr. LaVelle had been a professional golfer until the early 1950s. He later was a superintendent for several local golf courses, including the Alderwood and Lake Oswego country clubs and the Mt. Scott Golf Course, until his retirement during the late 1960s.
His wife of 65 years, Eleanor, died in 1992.

"Arminta Osborne Goss of Kernville died Dec. 20, 2005 in Lake Isabella of heart failure. "Minty" was born May 5, 1911 to Thomas and Lenora McMahon in Butte, Mont. She has resided in California since 1920. She married H. G. "Bud" Osborne Feb. 8, 1932. They spent 54 years together until his death in 1986. Their surviving son is Charles Byron Osborne. Their only daughter, Francia Parrino, died in a tragic accident in Texas in 1982.
During the World War II years, Minty worked at Fletcher Oil and Union Oil in the lab. In the 1950s and 60s she owned and operated three women's clothing stores in Gardena, Torrance, and Lomita. She also owned a bridal shop in Lomita, Calif. until 1969.She retired to Kernville in 1969 and was active in the Lady Elks and the St. Jude Altar Society. She utilized her extensive wedding knowledge to help brides with their weddings throughout the Kern Valley.
In 1991 she married Leland Goss. He died in 2002. Since that time her health declined. She has spent the past two years in the Skilled Nursing Center at Kern Valley Hospital. The family wishes to thank all those dedicated nurses for the care shown to Minty.
Surviving family includes son, Charles Osborne (Elaine) of Bellingham, Wash. and Palm Desert, Calif.; their daughters Stephanie Wencek (Jim) of Bellingham, Wash. and Krysta Osborne of Santa Monica, Calif., and their son, Robert Osborne of San Diego, Calif.; granddaughter, Tina Parrino, and grandson, Nicholas Parrino (Jenny) and their children Myles, Lauren and Bridgett; sons of Lee Goss, Gary and Tim Goss, and daughter, Shannon Goss.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 6 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Wofford Heights, Calif. Reception to follow at the church hall. All are invited to attend.
Burial will be private at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield, Calif.

She was a gracious person and always a lady. She exhibited in her voice and demeanor the strong influences of the South. To her last days, she was concerned about her appearance and if her hair was properly coiffed. Although the last five years of her life were difficult coping with her daughter's cancer and resulting death, and her husband's death, overall I believe she had a happy life. In her last years she had many friends, some considerably younger. She and Cordis lived in a beautiful area of St. Louis (overlooking the clydesdale paddock of Busch Gardens), had many, many friends, were involved with their church and had a happy marriage. Cordis was a true character (from Oklahoma) and had a very good sense of humor. They met during the war at a USO dance. Marion took care of her mother, Adelaide, for many years until her mother's death. She was very generous in her will to those she cared about and to her church and the Humane Society of Missouri. ENID — Born July 28, 1920, in Covington, Okla., and passed away Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, in St. Louis, Mo.
Beloved husband for 64 years of Marion Butts (nee Meier); dear father of the late Leanne Claire Butts; dear son of the late Louis and Ferrol Butts; dear grandson of the late Albert and Mary Ellis; dear brother of the late Nadine Fry (Vinton, Iowa), Vida Elston (San Francisco, Calif.), and Oleva Gladwell (St. Louis, Mo.).
Mr. Butts was a member of Affton Christian Church, Rotary Club of St. Louis County and Algavil Freedom Masonic Lodge. He was a retired real estate broker and served during WWII as a B-24 Bomber Pilot.
Graveside Service was held Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, in St. Paul Churchyard Cemetery. Arrangements by Kutis Affton Chapel, St. Louis, Mo.
