Carlton B. Eldridge, 87, of Springfield died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at Memorial Medical Center. He was born April 4, 1911, in Auburn, the son of Jenkson and Elizabeth Yorty Eldridge. He married M. Blythe Axford on June 23, 1943, in Lansing, Mich. Mr. Eldridge was a resident of springfield for more than 40 years and was a retired professor of music at Springfield College in Illinois for 40 years. He was a graduate of Michigan State University in 1929, where he received his master's degree in 1949. He was a concert, oratorio and radio tenor from 1934 to 1970 and was a published author and lecturer on music. He had taught at Springfield College in Illinois since 1949, having been the acting director of the music department from 1955 to 1957. He also taught at Ursuline Academy from 1950 to 1973 and had been adjunct associate professor of music at Sangamon State University since 1972 and choir master of St. Mary's Cathedral in Lansing, Mich., from 1940 to 1949. From 1934 to 1949 he was a private and conservatory instructor of voice and an adjunct teacher at Michigan State University. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Sigma at Michigan State University, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, National Association of Teachers of Singing since 1944, American Guild of Organists in the Lansing, Mich., chapter, Illinois Junior College Music Education Association, National Catholic Music Educators Association, Illinois Association of Blind Teachers and the National Association of Blind Teachers.; He was named in Who's Who in Music, the International Dictionary of Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Distionary of International Biography. Survivors: wife, M. Blythe; a son, David Carlton (wife, Suzanne) Eldridge of Naples, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Elpidio (Bonnie Blythe) Torres of Villa Park; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. From: "John Myers" To: bhugh Subject: Braille Music Library looking for home Date: Tue, 4 Aug 1998: Dear Mr. Hugh: I am the family attorney for, and a good friend of, Mrs. Blythe Eldridge, whose late husband, Mr. Carlton Eldridge, died last Saturday at the age of 87. Mr. Eldridge had been blind since the age of six, but was a professional musician--a singer and conductor, who managed the feat of conducting choirs for 30 or 40 years using braille music painstakingly transcribed by hand, note by note, work by work. Over his 65 year career, he accumulated a vast library of braille music, almost all of it vocal music, for solo and choirs, and including oratorios, opera and the like. I know nothing of braille, but knowing Mr. Eldridge's erudition and perfectionism, I can guarantee that the transcriptions are of the highest quality and utmost faithfulness to the originals. Mr. Eldridge was a professor of music at Springfield College here in Springfield, Illinois, and was an inspiration to generations of students. He was my wife's teacher and her friend for 45 years. He was also my vocal coach. Mr. Eldridge was listed in the Who's Who in American Music, if you want to look him up. Before his death, Mr. Eldridge and Mrs. Eldridge had attempted to find a taker for Mr. Eldridge's extensive library. However, they had little success. But they weren't tuned into the Internet, either. Since you have taken the trouble to publish a web site devoted to braille music, I figure you must know a lot of people who are interested in the subject.
