Known as a great judge of livestock at county fairs and an active participant in barn raisings throughout the area, Jacob Stong was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1874. He lived to age 78 when he was killed, along with his eldest daughter, at the Downsview crossing of the Grand Trunk Railway.
