He graduated from Trinity College in 1848, at the age of nineteen.
That same year he removed to Waterbury, as assistant to Charles
Fabrique, then principal of the academy. He was prominent in
oraganizing the Centre school district of Waterbury, and in the
establishment of the high school, of which he was the assistant
principal in 1851-52. After four years of successful teaching, he was
compelled to give it up, on account of throat trouble, and in 1853
became bookkeeper for Abbott & Wardwell button manufactures. In
September, 1855, he took charge of the books of the American Pin
Company, was responsibly connected with that company till his death.
In 1865 he was made secretary, and later was elected president. In
October, 1848, he became the organist of St. John's Church, and served
continuously until 1873, when he was compelled by illness to retire.
He resumed this work in 1876, and continued it until the illness
which preceded his death. As an organist he showed exceptional
ability, and as choir-master his training was most thorough and
effective. He was one of the founders of the Mendelssohn Society
which, until 1871, was the principal musical association in this
vicinity. He was elected president of the Harmonic Society at its
organization in 1889, and continued to hold that office until his
death. In politics he was a Republican, and at different
timesrepresented his ward in both branches of the common council. In
relegion he was an Episcopalian, a vestryman of St. John's Church for
many years and agent of the parish until 18 April 1892. He always
took an active interest in educational matters. He was for many years
a member of the board of education, and as chairman and treasurer
introduced many important reforms. He was the secretary and treasurer
of the St. Margaret's School from its organization until his death.
He was a council for the formal acceptance of the gift of Silas
Bronson for a public library, and later became a member of the board
of agents of the library and secretary.

Obituary
Rachel Phelps, the eldest child of John and Celia Phelps, was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, May 22, 1844, and passed away March 13, 1930, at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. William Poole. She was confined to her room for three weeks and became seriously ill on Sunday preceding her death.
She came with her parents, brother and sister, to Polo in 1856 and spent the remainder of her life in and around Polo.
On February 26, 1863, she was united in marriage with Abram Poole. To this union two sons, Charles and William, were born.
In early life she united with the Episcopal church of which she remained a faithful member. There being no Episcopal church in Polo she attended the Lutheran church as long as her health would permit.
She leaves to mourn her loss one sister, Kate J. Phelps of Polo, and four grandchildren, Edna and Irma, daughters of Charles, of California and Kenneth and Norma, son and daughter of William of Polo.
Rachel married Abraham Poole "Abram" 1, son of William Poole and Nancy Johnson, on 26 Feb 1863 in Polo, Ogle, Illinois, USA. Abram was born on 9 Nov 1836 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
