The last of six children, Evelyn was born into the bookish, warm and stable family of Effie and Elias Henry Walker in Corvallis, Oregon. Her father was a long-time school teacher and administrator, and she grew up knowing she would also teach.
Her mother died when she was only seven years old. Three years later, she went to live with an older sister, staying with her and her family until she was 18. At age 22, following her studies in Business Education and Social Sciences at Oregon State, she lived in Portland, working for a year as a secretary.
Then she joined her fiancé Norman Whitfield, someone she had known most of her life, where he was working in the Philippines. Their young marriage was soon interrupted by the intrusion of the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II, which is the subject of this book.
Later, they lived and worked in a number of places in Oregon and Washington, with Evelyn teaching whenever there was an opportunity, until their daughter Lauri was born. They returned to the Philippine Islands for a year when Lauri was 11, to fulfill a work contract for Norman. Then they returned to Corvallis, Oregon, to settle down for good. Evelyn completed an advanced degree at OSU, and continued to teach until retirement age.
Happily preoccupied with both family and church activities, Evelyn also keeps busy tending a lovely garden at her Corvallis home.
