   BRIEF HISTORY:
    This regiment of about 700 men was assigned to fill the ranks at Fort Strother for Andrew Jackson after the December 1813 "mutiny" of his army. While at Fort Strother, they comprised half of Jackson's forces until mid-January 1814 when their enlistments were up. This regiment was used to keep the lines of communication open and to guard supply lines.

   Their route was from Kingston, Tennessee to Fort Armstrong (early December 1813) to Fort Strother. Cherokees friendly to the United States fought with various units of the Tennessee militia and Lieutenant Colonel William Snodgrass commanded a detachment of Cherokees at Fort Armstrong from mid-January to early February 1814.

FUNERAL WEDNESDAY FOR NELLIE MCDONALD PIONEER OF THIS AREA       Withthe funeral Wednesday of Mrs. Nellie McDonald, Clipper, 86, the end ofanother colorful chapter in Whatcom county history will be written.Mrs. McDonald and her sister, Mrs. Dollie Rittenberg, who passed away in1943, were the daughters of Colonel James Alexander Patterson, West Pointgraduate, prospector and pioneer who came to California in the gold rushof '49 and then into the Northwest in the Fraser River gold stampede in1858.   Shortly there after he staked out a claim in the fertile timberand valley area on the Nooksack in the north end of Whatcom county,cleared and developed it, raised cattle which he drove up the Caribou asfood for the miners, and became one of the most colorful figures in theearly days of the county.     On the death of his Indian wife in thelatter 1860's, Colonel Patterson went to Captain Henry Roeder and said hewas willing to turn over his Nooksack river farm to anyone who would takehis two small daughters.    Captain Roeder sent him to Mrs. Phoebe Judsonwho took the girls and reared them as her own.      EARLY DAYS RECALLEDTheir memories of the early days in Whatcom
county, bear came to the Patterson home in search of food and cougarattacked their father's cattle.    When friends were made with theIndians, when their father bought things mostly at the Indian tradingpost at the mouth of the Nooksack, but for supplies and clothing drove toSehome where Ulyssess Baxter had the first store,  were subject ofnumerous Newspaper features and recountings at Old Settlers' meetings.In 1938 Mrs. McDonald and Mrs. Rittenberg, then 75 and 72, received theOld Settlers' cup given by Judge Jeremiah Neterer, Mrs. Rittenberg diedin 1943 at the age of 80.    Mrs. McDonald was born March 28, 1866, andin just four weeks (she died in a local hospital) would have attained 87years.    For 13 years under the century mark she had lived in Whatcomcounty.    Her husband, John McDonald, died December 26, 1925.    Her twoson are John H. McDonald, Clipper, road engineer with the U.S. ForestService, and J. Ivan McDonald, of Pasco.    Funeral services will be heldat 2 p.m. Wednesday in the  Bingham -
Dahlquist & Jerns Chapel, Rev. Harold Penhalurick, of the FirstPresbyterian church, officiating, with interment in Bay View cemetery.

In 1854 he was elected judge of the First Judicial Circuit,and six years later he was re-elected. After the close of the war heserved four years in the United States Senate, and since his retirementhas not be engaged in the practice of his profession

PATTERSON, David Trotter, senator, was born in Greene county, Tenn., Feb. 28, 1819, son of Andrew and Susan (Trotter) Patterson, and grandson of James Patterson, whose father emigrated from Ireland and settled in Pennsylvania, and later in Virginia. He received an academic education, after which he engaged in business for a short time, being first a paper-maker and then a miller. Subsequently he studied law in the office of Robert J. McKinney. He was admitted to the bar in 1841 and practiced with success. In 1854 he was elected a judge of the circuit court, and by re-election served in that office until 1803. During the war he was a staunch Union man and suffered arrest in November, 1801, upon suspicion of bridge burning in East Tennessee. Two years later he was elected by the legislature to fill a vacancy ir. the United States senate which had existed since Mar. 4, 1863, and took his seat in the upper house on

Mar. 4, 1865. He served as a member of the senate committees on commerce, revolutionary claims, and the District of Columbia until the end of his term, Mar. 3, 1869, when he retired to private life.
