10. John Kidd (Susannah Poole , George , John ) was born in 1786 in , Wexford, Ireland. He died on 1 Jul 1858 in , , Ohio, USA. He was buried in Headley Cemetery, Blacklick, , Ohio, USA.
John married Alice Lee Barndown in 1810/1811 in Ireland. Alice was born in 1789 in , Wexford, Ireland. She died after 1860 in , , Ohio, USA.
They had the following children.
31 F i Susan Kidd was born in 1813. She died in 1833/1835. She was buried in Headley Cemetery, Blacklick, , Ohio, USA. + 32 M ii Thomas Kidd was born in Oct 1814. Elizabeth married Richard Smith on 13 Feb 1812 in Ireland.
They had the following children.
+ 41 M i William Smith was born in 1813. He died after 1870. + 42 F ii Rachael Smith was born in 1815. + 43 F iii Susan Smith was born in 1817. + 44 M iv Richard Smith was born on 30 Jan 1823. He died on 21 Apr 1898. 45 M v George H. Smith was born in 1837 in Ireland.
12. George W. Kidd (Susannah Poole , George , John ) was born in 1792 in , Wexford, Ireland. He died on 7 Apr 1862 in Springfield, Hamilton, Ohio, USA. He was buried on 9 Dec 1862 in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.
Our Frederick Hollingsworth (1802-1869) had a "much involved" family, bloodwise, or genetically speaking. His brother John was married to a first cousin, Susannah Hollingsworth from across the fields in Ballvcanew. All of the Hollinsworths (sic) were well-to-do Protestant farmers, before
and after the Irish Rebellion of 1798. They - their social or economic class - represented what the late Irish drunk, Brendan Behan (d 1964) George Kidd Escapes to America called the "wealthy Episcopalian farmers." But the word "Episcopalian" is totally foreign to Irish Protestantism, it must have been Brendan's term when he was here in the States, for we often want to force our Americanisms on Europe, you know. (In Ireland, generally, a "Protestant" is not a term used to describe just any sect opposed to the Roman Catholic Sect. It is specifically applied to the Church of Ireland, formerly Established. Presbyterians are called just that - the Protestants used to call Presbyterians "Protestant Dissenters" - and other denominations retain their own names. But 'Episcopal' is an Americanism, although now, UK folk recognise the term quicker than tbey used to do.)
As such, close and repeated intermarriage begot a sort of pooling of wealth. George Kidd was one of the many children of old Thomas Kidd, dubbed "Thomas a-hundred" by the late Professor Franklin Kidd of Cambridge University, England. "He walked round his farm the day he died at age a 100," it was always said. George married Martha Hollinsworth, later Hollingsworth, from Cranacrower, the daughter of my Frederick's uncle William Hollinsworth (d. 1827). Whatever wealth George Kidd had inherited was supplemented by the fortune which Martha had brought to the union.
But George Kidd was an investor and apparently backed or sank, a boodle of his upper crust money in the wrong scheme and went belly up. In a letter written on July 26, 1849, by Henry Lee of Carnew Parish, County Wexford/Wicklow border region, to Thomas Kidd in Clermont County, Ohio, brother to George Kidd, we have only these portions extracted for us 20 years ago:
"Dear Thomas, The government was good and prosperous under
George III, until the subjects of the Pope of Rome were admit-
ted into the Councils of the Crown ... Uncle George Kidd is
leaving Ireland - his family (to go out) later. He went secur-
ity for some people and lost it... Richard Smith is employed
as a newspaper officer at a good salary in Cincinnati..."
Smith, whose mother was one of the Kidds, later was editor of the Cincinnati Gatette and the fabled Price Current. Another letter, this one from Thomas Kidd, P.O.Bantam, Ohio, to John Kidd, Sr., at Ovid, same state - his brother - dated Dec 12, 1849, reads in part:
"You will be surprised that George was obliged to run away
from executions, one from Captain somebody in Gorey, and an-
other from young Goodisson that keeps a loaning bank at 50%.
A son to John Hollingsworth of Ballinakill is in Cincinnati,
at present, who came out with George's family, as (George)
was obliged to come away before them."
And a letter of April 11, 1850 from Samuel Lee at Barnadown (townland), County Wexford, to Alice Kidd his niece in Ovid, Ohio, (after telling of her grandfather Thomas Kidd's death at 100 "two weeks ago," says "Your uncle George left with family, we thought in an embarrassed way. We have not heard from him."
We found a case in the Irish Common Law Reports, II:336, Kidd v. Loughnan, 1849, which was intriguing, since it was a George Kidd who was Plaintiff, but the wife's name was Mary, and the case did not fit in any other way, still going on after our G.K. had sneaked away.
Kidd naturalized in the Cincinnati Court of Common Pleas, his Declaration of Intention being dated 1 May 1854. The petition shows George Kidd had emigrated from Liverpool on the 14 March 1849 and arrived in New York on 14 Apr 1849. We have not found his name on the passenger lists for that day or other adjacent days. He was aged 62 when he signed the petition,, and a native of Ireland. His son-in-law, Edward Thomas Hollingsworth, the one who had come out with George's wife and family (his, wife, was George Kidd's daughter, his aunt Martha was George Kidd's wife) petitioned the same day, stating he had also sailed from Liverpool on 10 April and arrived in New York on 1 May of
1849. We did find him on the Passenger list of the ship Constitution passenger manifest dated 2 May 1849. (HR March 1968 p. 6.)
Born in 1792, and aged 57 when he came out of Ireland, it would seem that George Kidd did not attempt to start over in business, but lived out his days in retirement, as Irish gentlemen did. He died on
Monday 7 April 1862, aged 70. Martha (Hollingsworth) Kidd, his wife, born at Cranacrower, Ballycanew, County Wexford, died in Cincinnati on Wed 4 Apr 1866, aged 68. Both were laid to rest in the Cemetery of Spring Grove, whose Superintendent boasted in his letter to me of May 9, 1962 that of the 150,000 burials there, all had been well catalogued with statistics. The Kidd-Hollingsworth monument is a large and impressive affair.
George married Martha Hollingsworth, daughter of William Hollingsworth and Elizabeth, on 5 Jun 1823 in Ballycarnew, Wexford, Ireland. Martha was born in 1798 in Cranacrower, Ballycanew, Wexford, Ireland. She died on 4 Apr 1866 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, USA. She was buried on 7 Apr 1866 in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.
They had the following children.
+ 46 F i Susannah "Susan" Kidd was born on 5 Sep 1829. She died on 25 Feb 1905. 47 M ii George W. Kidd was born on 11 Jul 1832 in Ireland. He died on 5 Dec 1901 in New York City, New York, New York, USA. He was buried on 9 Dec 1902 in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinatti, Hamilton, Ohio, USA. 48 F iii Martha Kidd was born in 1839 in , Wexford, Ireland. She died after 1910. 49 F iv Lucy J. Kidd was born in 1841 in , Wexford, Ireland. She died in 1921 in Cincinnatti, Hamilton, Ohio, USA. Lucy married John Honeywell Watson. John was born in 1831 in , , New York, USA. He died in 1906 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA.
14. Thomas A. Kidd (Susannah Poole , George , John ) was born in 1795 in , Wexford, Ireland. He died on 30 May 1880 in New Richmond, Clermont, Ohio, USA. He was buried on 1 Jun 1890.
FREDERICK HOLLINGSWORTH IN OHIO!
You readers may remember the article published in HR for December, 1966, page 131 wherein the news of Frederick Hollingsworth's arrival in New York aboard the Brigantine "William," July 20, 1829, is
announced. From that time until now, I had no certain idea of where he was in La Porte, Indiana, and obtained a marriage license with the bride intended, Elizabeth Brown. The fact that he didn't seem to appear anywhere in the United States Census of 1830 was for a long time a real mystery. (There was a Frederick in the Knox County, Indiana area, but facts don't admit him to be ours.) Though I had personally been satisfied with the search, feeling that I had either missed him by moving too fast, or that the census takers had done so, since he was, at the time, but a single man, the possibility of omission not being the least remote. I knew that, to fit known facts about him, Frederick's census would have to admit of "a free white male 20-30 years old," and, an "alien, a foreigner not naturalized. (The requirement of a five year residency in U.S.A. was then in force.) The only real possibility was that he was the "1 alien" (mistakenly published as "2 aliens" in our copy) in the household of "B. Hollings-
worth" in Cincinnati, Ohio. (See HR Vol. 2 page 114 Ohio 1830 no. 5.) There are two young males in this household, one of them between 20 and 30 years of age. I also knew that other Irish born Hollingsworths had lived in the same city as early as 1819. Also the fact that Edward Hollingsworth, a supposed nephew of my Frederick (see p. 5) came to Cincinnati in 1849, seemed to me to have some meaning. Now, just today (March 1, 1968) I have found what I consider proof.Recently I was combing Clermont County, Ohio, deed indexes, for several clients. I always examine the "H" columns to get out any Hollingsworth entries, and, when I turned to do so, there, staring up
at me from the screen of the film reader was the name I perhaps am most attune to. I copied down the particulars and ordered the film containing the deed book. Today this film arrived. Here are brief extracts of the material:(1) Deed Book C2-27, Page 338, Clermont County, Ohio. "I, William Holiday, for the sum of $400. in hand paid by FREDERICK HOLLINGSWORTH..." conveyance of 75 acres in Tate township, bounded by Ulrey's Run, and a line on COOKE's land, and by LEED's land etc. Signed by William Holliday and Marvan Holliday. Dated May 16, 1831. Recorded May 20, 1831. Witnesses: THOMAS KIDD* and HENRY JONES, J.P.
(2) Ditto, page 496. "Know all men by these presents, that I, FREDERICK HOLLINGSWORTH, for and in consideration of the sum of Six Hundred Dollars lawful money of the United States to me in hand well and truly paid by MATTHIAS EDWARDS, etc. sell, alien, release, convey & confirm... a tract of 75 acres in Tate township, ... to wit: Beginning at a stake and stone and a fallen poplar north east corner of Kid's* land, thence north 66 West and with said Kidd's* line 120 poles to a stake and stone on the bank of Ulrey's Run and another corner of the said KID's* land, thence down the run ... by LEEDS' line (etc.) Signed by FREDERICK HOLLINGSWORTH, Sept. 15, 1831. Re- corded Sept. 30. Witnesses, HENRY JONES, J.P. and THOMAS KIDD.* Fred- erick Hollingsworth acknowledged the deed Sept. 15, 1831. *Thomas Kidd appearing above is of highest importance. He was without doubt "Thomas Kidd the younger, Askamore, Carnew Parish, Co. Wexford, Ireland," a brother to George Kidd of Askamore who married MARTHA HOLLINGSWORTH, first cousin of Frederick Hollingsworth! A Kidd family researcher, in England, advised me some years ago, that, while George and Martha (Hollingsworth) Kidd emigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio, about 1850, George had two brothers who emigrated very early - about 1831 - named JOHN & THOMAS KIDD. John Kidd settled "near Columbus, Ohio," but my correspondent did not have any further record of Thom- as, who "probably went South." (HR Vol. 1, page 106 deed 31.) I went over other Clermont deeds and found, in B2-26, page 4, a deed from William Remick to Thomas Kidd, both of Tate township, dated Feb. 25, 1830. This book is the original deed book. (C-27 is a copy made many years later.) On the margin, Thomas Kidd signed his own autograph - "I have rec. *** (Blurred) this deed - Thos. Kidd." I quickly got a copy of the entry and compared it with my photostatic copy of Memorial 540213 from Ireland, dated 1823 but registered by Thomas Kidd the Younger, Feb. 25, 1825 in Co Wexford. The signatures are not strikingly the same, as with those of Frederick Hollingsworth from Ireland and America, but are very similar: [note: examples are shown, but my copy isn't clear enough to scan with any degree of clarity...see HR. Ken] I examined the U.S. Census, Tate township, Clermont County, Ohio from 1830 through 1870 inclusive, and found this Thomas Kidd and his family in each of them. In 1830 he is "30-40" (page 191) 1 male under 5, and a female 20-30; and another 30-40. In 1840 (p. 149) he is a male 40-50 with a family of 7 children. In 1850 (page 372 Rev- erse) he is listed as "Thomas Kidd, aged 62 (error, see below) far- mer, $6882 Real Estate Value, born Ireland. Wife Alice, 42, ditto, and Henry, 18, Pinkham, 17, Elizabeth 14, Wilmot 12, Alice 10 and Walter 5, all born Ohio. In 1860 (page 276 Reverse) he is at Post Office Amelia, aged 65, farmer, $6,000 Real Estate: $1,505 Personal Estate: born Ireland. Alice, 55, Ireland: Bessie, 23, Wilmot 22, Merchant, Alice, 20, and Walter, 15, all born Ohio. In 1870 (page 299) P.O. Williamsburg, Ohio, he is aged 76, blind, no real estate: $8,000 Personal estate, born Ireland, U.S. Citizen: no occupation, Both parents foreign born: Bessie, 35, Keeping house, and Alice, 30, assistant housekeeper, both born Ohio. The ages are never exactly right or in accord with each census schedule, but the 1850 is obvious- ly the only bad error. I made a quick search of the Index (1820-46) to Passenger Arrivals, Port of New York, and found: Ship ANNA MARIA, Arrived June 30, 1829, N.Y.C. Thomas Kidd, age 30, farmer, nativity Ireland Alice Kidd, age 28, " " Edwin Kidd, age 3, " " (Last Residence; Ireland. Destination: U.S.A.)
