FROM THE MCDOWELL SCRAPBOOK - DUFFERIN ARCHIVES: With the passing of John Kidd, who died at his home in Everett a couple of weeks ago, one of the original settlers in the township of Tossorontio is removed. Mr. Kidd is probably the last of the old guard. There may remain some sho knew and associated with these original pioneers half a century ago, but so far a known the original incomers have all passed away. The late Mr. Kidd was born in Mono Mills on January 19, 1833 and spent his boyhood and youth there. When about 24 years of age he and his brothers, Joseph, Henry and Thomas made their way up to what is now Airlie and finding the land there excellent, and an abundance of water, they decided to locate, and took out their patent rights to Lot 22 and 23 on the Tossorontio side and Lots 22 and 23 in Mulmur side. They were in a wilderness, their nearest neighbours being on the 6th line of Mulmur near Mansfield. On their property is the famed Rookery Creek where wild pigeons came in coutless thousands to nest. Here the deceased put in nearly half a century overcoming all the handicaps of pioneering, transforming forest lots into a splendid farm, raising a large family and prospering. He was a sturdy type of man possessing all the characteristics of mind and the tireless energy of the successful pioneer to whom this coutry owes a great debt. He was an Anglican in religion and a Conservative in politics. In 1863 he married Ellen Little, daughter of the late John Little, one of the pioneers of Rosemont, and on the 10th of March four years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Kidd surrounded by their family, celebrated the golden anniversary of their wedding. Mrs. Kidd survives and to share her grief are six sons and four daughters. Two of the sons teachers, - John T. at Mildmay and Andrew R. at Everett. The others are farmers. William is in Melancthon, G.F. on the Second Line of Tossorontio, Sibbald on the old homestead, and Arthur at Elnora, Saskatchewan. The daughters are Mrs. John D. Little of Rosemont, Mrs. John Gallaugher and Mrs. Jesse Jones.

SHELBURNE ECONOMIST: Another of the pioneers of Tossorontio Township in the person of Mrs. Eleanor Kidd passed to the great beyond on April 18th, 1924. The late Mrs. Kidd, who formerly was Eleanor Little, was born near Rosemont on Sept. 5th, 1840. In 1861 she married John Kidd and shortly afterwards they settles in Tossorontio Township on Lot 23, Con 1. To them was born a family of twelve children, ten of whom survive. They are: W.J. Kidd, 4th line, Melancthon; A.R. Kidd, Everett; F.G. Kidd, in Tossorontio Twp; S.E. (Kidd), on the old homestead, Tossorontio; Arthur, at Elnora, Alta; J.T., at Coniston, Ontl; Mrs. J. LIttle, Everett; Mrs. Robert Pangman, Mrs. J. C. Jones and Mrs. J. Gallaugher, all of Tossorontio Twp. She is also survived by 40 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. About 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Kidd retired from the farm and took up residence in Everett, where Mr. Kidd died seven years ago. Last fall the late Mrs. Kidd went to live with her daughter, Mrs. J.C. Jones, where she peacefully passed away on Good Friday. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Easter Monday to St. David's Church Cemetery (*should have stated St. Lukes Cemetery), near Rosemont. Reb. J.H. colclough of Creemore and Rev. G. Gray of Rosemont conducted the service. The pallbearers were four of her sons and Robert Pangman and John Gallaugher, son-in-laws.
