Bedford Mail Friday December 4, 1896 John L. Campbell The following account of the death of an old citizen of Bedford is from the Sedalia, Mo., Sunday Democrat of Nov. 22. John L. Campbell, who was born in Bourbon county, Kentucky, January 1st, 1811, died yesterday, only a few days before reaching his 86th anniversary. In point of service he ranked as the oldest railway employee in Sedalia, and in point of years was indeed a pioneer. For the past five days the members of his family have expected each hour to be the last. He resided with his son, Charles, at 609 Lafayette avenue, and was surrounded by his children, all being with him except one son. J. M., who lives at Emporia, Kas. Mr. Campbell died at 9:20 yesterday morning of general debility and the funeral services will be held at the house. Among his daughters present were Mrs. W. B. Lyons, wife of the superintendent of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas, Mrs. J. C. Ragsdale, Sedalia; Mrs. Mary Dunihue, Bedford, Ind.; Mrs. Lizzie Rawlins, Pomona, Kas., and Mrs. Julia Berry, St. Louis. Mr. Campbell came to Sedalia from Emporia, Kas., and was placed as the watchman at the Fifth street crossing,! where he remained until the completion of the new depot last May, being transferred to the Broadway crossing. Here he remained but a short time his infirmities forcing him to desist and for the past six months has been little more than able to leave his bed. When he removed his household effects from Emporia to Sedalia, in 1880, in handling some of the pieces of furniture, a nail scratched his hand, which caused a sore. This has never healed and has given him untold trouble and caused him much pain and to its effect is attributable his ill health in a degree. Years ago Mr. Campbell was a member of the Christian church, but he disputed some of the tenets of the faith of that church. He died as he had lived-honest, honorable, upright, fearless in his walk in life, though without the pale of the church. He was well nigh perfect in many of the attributes of the pure Christian, embodying the principles of good citizenship and adhering to the precept of the golden rule. His mind! was broadened by much reading and careful study, and though but a crossing watchman, one of the humblest positions in the service of the road, he rose above his surroundings and was the peer as a man and & citizen of the president himself. All men were his friends and none who knew "Dad" Campbell had an unkind word or thought for him. His humble life is as a lamp to the feet of men whose ambition soared above him, whose pretensions led them away beyond his ken. The sorrowing relatives have the hearty sympathy of a host of friends, who mourn with them the death of this good man and whose words of comfort may warm the hearts chilled by the touch of the hand of the grim reaper. The funeral will take place from the residence at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. J.S. Myers conducting the service.
