Mildred M. Flood of Spring Lake, formerly of Bradley Beach, entered into eternal life on Friday at Sunnyside Manor in Manasquan. She was 88 years old. Mrs. Flood was born in Newark and a graduate of Our Lady of Good Council High School there. She lived in Bradley Beach for 40 years before moving to Manchester and then Spring Lake. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend who cherished her family above all else. Mrs. Flood was an avid reader and world traveler. She was a member of the Bradley Beach Grammar School PTA, Catholic Daughters of America of the Church of the Ascension in Bradley Beach, the Book Babes Book Club in Spring Lake and most recently a parishioner of Saint Catharine's RC Church in Spring Lake.
Mrs. Flood was predeceased by her beloved husband Peter J. Flood, her sons Richard and Francis, her grandson Peter F. Ryan and her brothers John, Joseph and Charles Thunell. She is survived by her children: Rev. Msgr. Peter J. Grace Anne (Flood) Rible, 85, of Belmar passed away on Sunday, August 12 peacefully at her home with her loving family at her side.
A Belmar resident since 1952, Grace was born in Neptune and spent her childhood in Neptune and Bradley Beach. She attended St. Rose Grammar School and graduated from Saint Rose High School in 1944. Family was the most important thing in her life and she was dedicated to raising her children after her husband died in 1971.
Grace, who retired from New Jersey Bell, was active in feeding the poor through the Meals on Wheels program and as a member of the New Jersey Bell Telephone Pioneers group. She was a communicant of St. Rose where she volunteered. In addition, she was a poll worker in Belmar and a member of the Republican County Committee and Belmar Republican Club.
Her grandfather, William Flood was the first Marshall of Ocean Park (now Bradley Beach) and she can trace her lineage to Irish Revolutionary hero Michael Collins.
Raised by her beloved late aunt, Annie Collins Flood, she is predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Mary (Collins) Flood of Bradley Beach, her husband, John Allen Rible, Jr., her brothers Joseph, Daniel, Peter, William and sisters, Mary Flood and Virgina Corwin, and grandchildren, Catherine Mary and Adam Benjamin.
Grace is survived by her children, Mary Anne Rible of West Long Branch, Joanne and her husband, John Bianco of Spring Lake Heights, Sue Anne and husband, John Doran of Toms River, John A. and his wife, Marilyn Rible of Wall, Alan and his wife, Marybeth Rible of Belmar, and Assemblyman David and his wife, Jacqueline Rible of Wall.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Denison. Following the Mass, co-celebrated by Father Stephen Mocio and Charlie's nephew Msgr. Peter Flood, interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Denison. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Rosary will be recited and family visitation will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church.
He was born Charles Christopher Flood on Oct. 12, 1929, in the Township of Neptune, N.J. His parents were Joseph and Mary Catherine Flood.
He left New Jersey in 1947 when he joined what became the United States Air Force and was stationed at Perrin Field in Denison. During his service, which ended in 1951, he was a chaplain's assistant, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
In Denison he met and fell in love with Helen Lee Jones. The couple married Jan. 15, 1951, at St. Patrick, and their union produced eight children, whom he lovingly referred to as his "Eight Strings."
Inspired by a passage in Ecclesiastes (4:12), he told each, often and sincerely, "I want you kids to always stick together. Remember, eight strings that are wound together will always be as strong as a rope, not easily broken."
While he and Helen Lee raised their children, he also served as a youth athletic leader and was a Scoutmaster of Troup 602 in Boy Scouts for a number of years, inspiring and helping shape the lives of young men, many of whom became community leaders in Grayson County.
The bulk of Charlie's working career was at Johns-Manville Pipe Plant in Denison, and after retirement he continued to work at various jobs. His volunteer services, which were numerous, continued through his residency at Mauk Circle in Denison, and he continued to cultivate new friendships throughout his life.
He is survived by sons Tom Flood (wife, Debbie) and their children Tommy (wife, Theresa) and Patrick (wife, Monika); Jerry Flood (wife Audrey) and children Bryan (wife, Jeanine), Casey (wife, Patricia) and Preston; John Flood (wife Cheryl) and children Christie (husband, Josh James), Danny (wife, Michelle) and Michael (wife, Ashley); and daughters Debbie Eldredge (husband Donny) and children David and Dianna (husband, Justin Roskey); Cathy Johnston (husband Vic) and children Jana (husband, Travis Nobles), Julie (husband, Rene Talamantes) and Jessica (husband, Joey Smith); Patti Osbourn (husband Charles) and children Brent (wife, Lynessa) and Craig (wife, Katy); Mary Lou Kimbrell (husband Kenny) and children Melissa (husband, Vinyl Manohar) and Jeremy (wife, Amanda); and Donna Aday (husband Jeff) and children Stephen Thompson (wife, Julie) and Lauren (husband, Steven Powless).
Also, his great-grandchildren, Juliette, Jillian, Sydney, Carter, Eryn, Austin, Sofia, Sawyer, Zavier, Izabelle, Jubilee, Harper Dolly, Caroline, Jack, Ethan, Eva, Zachary, Amy, Kolbe, Abby, Olivia, Lily and Andrew.
He is also survived by his special friend Velma Smith, who he met at Mauk Circle and with whom spent many happy times for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and sisters and his beloved wife Helen Lee, who died Sept. 20, 1991.
Charlie leaves behind a philosophy of living a full and faithful life, filled with love and compassion for others. His services are under the care of Bratcher Funeral Home, and the family wishes to thank the staff of Guardian Hospice for its loving care in his final days."
