OBITUARY

Laura Bell Hightower, daughter of Joseph and Millie Hightower was born in Dallas county, Iowa, near Earlham, on April 27, 1874 and departed this phase of life in St. Francis hospital, Breckenridge, Minnesota, on May 17, 1940.  She spent her childhood, and, grew into womanhood near Earlham, excepting for a short time when the family lived in Clay county, Iowa.
She was married to Clyde McKibben on November 25, 1896, and they established their home on a farm near Earlham, living in that vicinity for several years, but, later moving to Massena, Iowa, and late on to Nevinville.  In the spring of 1921 the family moved to Breakenridge, Minnesota, where they have since resided.
To Mr. and Mrs. McKibben were born four children, who, with her husband, survive her.  They are, Mrs. Calvin Limbaugh, Fontanelle, Iowa; Mrs. C. A. Huisman, Sauk Center, Minnesota; Pernal and Frank McKibben; Breckenridge, Minnesota.  She is also survived by two brothers, and one sister; John Hightower, Indianapolis, Indiana; Carl Hightower, Des Moines, Iowa; and Mrs. Wm. Walker, Des Moines, Iowa; also, by eight grandchildren, who with one exception, were all present at her funeral, on the afternoon of May 20, 1940.  The funeral was at the First Methodist church, Breckenridge, Minnesota, with the pastor, Rev. Hill officiating.
Laura, as her friends called her, was a birthright member of the Friends and while a young woman joined the United Brethern church, at Hickory Grove.  When they moved to Massena, she transferred her membership to the Methodist church there, and, later on, transferred to the Methodist church at Nevinville, where she remained a member to the time of her passing on.
She was a loyal, faithful wife, and, the kind of mother the writer of old must have had in mind when he said, "Her children arise up and call her blessed."  As a neighbor, she was always ready to extend a helping hand.  She ever took a deep interest in the welfare of her neighbors, and of the community.  She grew old and weary in body, but, not in Spirit, being always ready to "Rejoice with them that do rejoice and weep with them that weep."
Much appreciated by the family were the many beautiful floral offerings, the large number of people who called at the home to offer sympathy and aid, and, the many folks who attended her funeral and followed her body to its resting place in the Breckenridge cemetery.  The grief at her passing is somewhat less poignant, knowing that she has been a follower of Him who said "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

Memories of my Mother Edna Campbell and my Father Scott J. Campbell
By Helen Campbell Brady

My mother was just 17 when she was married.  Her mother and father were divorced and there were few things women could do to earn a living.  My mother would have graduated from Los Angeles High School June of 1905.  Because there was not money for graduation dresses and wedding clothes, she chose to marry in April 1905.  She was a good student, specially in math and helped my Dad take a Correspondence Course for sheet metal layout work.  He had a job as an apprentice sheet metal worker for a shop in Los Angeles.  When I was a baby in 1907 my father started his own shop and my mother would help him at night while I slept in a basket on a work bench.
Both my mother and father had lots of energy and loved to dance and play cards.  We always had family vacations camping in the Calif(ornia) Mountains.  Whenever we went there would be a group of friends, all with cars which had to be pushed up the mountains and rocks under the wheels to keep form sliding back yards.  Brakes had wooden shoes and would catch on fire.  Once my motherrolled me up in a blanket and pushed me down the hill while she and my Dad threw dirt on the brakes.  My mother was the disciplaintarian in our family.  One look was enough for us to straighten up.  My father had only a third grade education but was very quick minded.  He talked a lot and joked and was called "Scotty" by many people.  Mom was particular about  our dress and manners, while Dad would start us to giggle behind her back.  They both knew financial hardships as they grew up so both were determined to make Don and my childhood happy.  This they succeeded in.  Dad died of a heart attack Aug 1956 and Mom Nov 1978.  As you know she was blind as was her father in later life.

"FACTORY BLOWN UP, ONE MAN INJURED

One man was badly injured and a large portion of the factory at 3306 S. Main, in which he was working, was blown out shortly after noon today when a can containing a small amount of gasoline exploded with terrific force. The man injured is Charles Neergard, 28 years old, living on West Fortyseventh street. He is badly cut about the face and was only partly conscious when taken to the Receiving hospital. The cause of the explosion is unknown. The cause of the explosion is not clearly understood. It took place in the repair room of the United Cornice works. Neergard was instructed some days ago to repair some cans which had contained gasoline. He was pitting molten solder on one of the cans when the explosion took place. It is believed that a small amount of gasoline had been allowed to remain in the can and when heated mixed with the air in a deadly explosive mixture."  Los Angeles Herald, Number 3, 4 October 1912.
